The Lowdown

The internet’s loudest athlete is back in the batter’s box. IShowSpeed premiered Season 2 of Speed Goes Pro on his YouTube channel Wednesday at noon Eastern, starting with Hall of Famer Derek Jeter (YouTube). Five more legends follow, ending with Mike Tyson in February (YouTube; Bleacher Report).

Key Takeaways

  • Episode 1 premiered Nov. 4 with Derek Jeter and baseball (YouTube).
  • Serena Williams (tennis) is up Nov. 11 and Usain Bolt (track) Nov. 18 (YouTube).
  • Part 2 brings Michael Phelps (Jan. 24), bowler Pete Weber (Jan. 30) and Mike Tyson (Feb. 7) (YouTube).
  • OBB produces the series, presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods (YouTube).
  • It streams only on IShowSpeed’s YouTube channel (YouTube).

What Happened

YouTube announced the return on its official blog, laying out a six-episode season split into two parts. Each legend gets a different sport, and each episode puts Speed through a real training session with them before he tries to compete (YouTube). The official trailer, embedded above, teases all six matchups (the official trailer; Bleacher Report).

“What I love about Speed Goes Pro is that we can bring together people from different generations through a shared love of sports,” Speed said in YouTube’s announcement. “For some of my younger fans, the show is a chance to get to know them for the first time” (YouTube).

The schedule runs Jeter on Nov. 4, Williams on Nov. 11 and Bolt on Nov. 18, then picks back up in January with Phelps and Weber before Tyson closes it out on Feb. 7 (YouTube).

The Pit Take

In our opinion, this lineup is a flex no traditional network could pull off this cheaply: six all-time greats agreeing to be good sports for a 21-year-old streamer, because that’s where the young audience is. Season 1 proved the format works because Speed actually tries, and fails, loudly. The Tyson finale is the one everyone will clip. Pair this with his Miles Morales Halloween stream and Jake Paul’s Christmas Eve fight and you get a clear picture of where sports entertainment is heading.
