Overview
Amy Ryan’s Beadie Russell was one of The Wire’s quieter presences, but her later career crosses very different registers. Gone Baby Gone brought an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress, while The Office gave her a major comedy showcase as Holly Flax. Her screen work also includes In Treatment, Birdman, Bridge of Spies, Only Murders in the Building and Beau Is Afraid. The theater career is equally important. Ryan received Tony nominations for Uncle Vanya and A Streetcar Named Desire before returning to Broadway as Sister Aloysius in the 2024 revival of Doubt: A Parable. The Tony Awards’ official record lists a nomination for leading actress in a play, a different category from her earlier featured-actress nominations. Her stage work also includes the Obie-winning performance in Love, Love, Love and Lisa D’Amour’s Detroit. In the same year as Doubt, Ryan appeared opposite Colin Farrell in Sugar, Apple’s Los Angeles detective drama. The contrast between the school principal on stage and another screen mystery illustrates how little a single role such as Beadie can encompass. These are selected, documented career milestones, rather than an exhaustive filmography or a claim that an old promotional biography describes her current schedule.
