Overview

Frankie Faison’s Ervin Burrell embodies The Wire’s political pressures on police leadership, but the actor’s career extends far beyond officials and uniforms. Before Baltimore, he was already an established stage performer: his Gabriel in the original Broadway production of August Wilson’s Fences earned a 1987 Tony nomination. Film audiences also knew him from the Hannibal Lecter films. This background matters because Burrell was one chapter in an extensive career, rather than its starting point. After The Wire, Faison played Sugar Bates, a former boxer and ex-convict who runs a bar, in Banshee. His later work includes Luke Cage, Till and The Rookie: Feds. A particularly significant leading performance came in The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, portraying the veteran killed during a police response to an accidentally activated medical alert. The Gotham Film & Media Institute awarded him Outstanding Lead Performance in 2021, an important distinction from his earlier supporting-character recognition. He discussed the film and Till in subsequent interviews about the historical and social responsibilities of acting. More recently, Faison starred as Walter, a widower, in Netflix’s eight-episode drama Ripple (2025), alongside Julia Chan, Ian Harding and Sydney Agudong. That role places grief, companionship and everyday connection at the centre of his later screen work.
