Overview

John Doman’s Bill Rawls makes institutional power feel personal: abrasive, impatient and deeply invested in the chain of command. Doman arrived at that defining television role through an unusual route. A Philadelphia native and Vietnam veteran, he worked in advertising before taking acting classes in his forties and leaving the business in 1991. That lived experience helped distinguish him from actors whose careers began in childhood, although his characters should never be treated as autobiography. After The Wire, Doman continued to play formidable authority figures. He led Borgia as Rodrigo Borgia, the future Pope Alexander VI, and became crime boss Carmine Falcone in Gotham. Other credits include Damages and The Affair. More recently, Netflix’s Eric (2024) cast him as the father of Benedict Cumberbatch’s troubled puppeteer. In Long Bright River (2025), he played the grandfather of the sisters at the centre of a Philadelphia mystery involving addiction, disappearance and murder. The location gave the production particular personal resonance, even though it filmed in New York. In a March 2025 interview, Doman explicitly said he was not thinking about retirement and wanted to keep acting while he could remember his lines. That is a dated statement of his intentions, rather than a guarantee about future projects.
