The Story

AJ, who uses her real name, AJ Mendez, on Instagram, posted the photos on Halloween. She picked Jill Valentine, the S.T.A.R.S. officer from the original game and Resident Evil 3, while Punk took Leon S. Kennedy, the rookie cop turned agent at the center of Resident Evil 4. She credited the costumes to @sandymimpson and @bakingjason (411mania).

The caption’s pun, “I’ll give you S.T.A.R.S,” is a nod to the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, the police unit Jill belongs to in the original game. It’s also a wink at Resident Evil 3, where the Nemesis monster hunts Jill while growling “S.T.A.R.S.”

Wrestling accounts ran with it. WrestleOps’ repost alone pulled more than 31,000 likes, 2,800 reposts and nearly 2,000 bookmarks (@WrestleOps on X), and wrestling news sites quickly picked up the photos (Bleacher Report; eWrestlingNews).

Back to work this week

Halloween is the calm before a loud week for Punk. On Wednesday’s NXT, he challenges Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship in an Unsanctioned Match. Two days later, he faces Kevin Owens in a No Holds Barred match on SmackDown, which tapes in Brooklyn and airs Friday, Nov. 6, according to 411mania (411mania).

The Background

AJ Lee and CM Punk married in 2014, and both are longtime, outspoken comics and gaming fans; they appeared together at San Diego Comic-Con this summer. The Resident Evil costumes landed during a big stretch for the franchise, whose latest film just crossed $400 million at the global box office (PCP has the numbers).
