The Story
Universal Pictures announced on September 12 that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has surpassed $1.677 billion worldwide, passing 2015’s Jurassic World to become the studio’s biggest film of all time (NBCUniversal).
By the end of that weekend, the studio projected $601.2 million domestic and $1.083 billion international, for $1.685 billion globally. It is now the 12th highest-grossing film ever and the third-biggest non-franchise title (NBCUniversal).
The run has stacked up records: highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, highest-grossing film ever for IMAX, biggest opening weekend for IMAX 70mm domestically, and Nolan’s highest-grossing film domestically, internationally and globally. Universal said the film returned to No. 1 globally in its eighth weekend, dropping only 9% domestically (NBCUniversal).
“A generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself,” NBCUniversal Entertainment chairman Donna Langley said of the film from Nolan and producer Emma Thomas (NBCUniversal).
