Hudson Williams on Parasocial Fans: ‘Shane and Ilya Are for Everyone. Hudson and Connor Are for Themselves’

Asked on CBC’s The Assembly about fans who form parasocial bonds with him, the Heated Rivalry star drew a line between the characters and the actors. The clip passed 240,000 views on X.

The Lowdown

Hudson Williams has watched Heated Rivalry fans fall hard for Shane and Ilya, and for him and Connor Storrie. In a preview clip from CBC’s The Assembly, he gave his clearest answer yet on where the line sits: the characters belong to the audience, and the actors’ lives don’t (Bustle; clip on X).

Key Takeaways

  • A member of The Assembly, where autistic and neurodivergent interviewers question a celebrity guest, asked Williams about fans forming parasocial relationships with him (Bustle).
  • Williams said he didn’t realize “the level it could go to” until the show, and that some fans are “living so vicariously through this fictional thing” (Bustle).
  • He quoted showrunner Jacob Tierney: “Shane and Ilya are for everyone. Hudson and Connor are for themselves” (Bustle; clip on X).
  • On Storrie, he said how much his co-star shares “is up to him,” adding, “You kinda just gotta be like: Not my business” (Bustle).
  • A fan account’s post of the clip passed 240,000 views and 4,500 likes on X (clip on X).

The Story

The question was blunt, which is the point of The Assembly. “What is your perspective on your fans becoming emotionally invested in your characters, to the point of developing parasocial relationships with you?” one interviewer asked, according to Bustle (Bustle).

Williams didn’t dodge it. “That’s super interesting to me. I didn’t quite realize the level it could go to, until the show,” he said. “They are living so vicariously through this fictional thing, and it’s realer to them than anything else they have in their life. Which is something I can’t relate with. I’ve never clung onto something that hard” (Bustle).

He then went after shipping, the fan habit of pairing up co-stars off screen. He pointed to Twilight, The Notebook and Titanic as examples of couples fans wanted to be real: “They were like, why are they not together? … It’s like, they’re actors” (Bustle).

‘Not my business’

He wasn’t dismissive of the people who love the show. “I understand where they’re coming from. Like, the show means a lot, whatever. These characters mean a lot to them. But, you kind of have to separate art from artists,” he said, before borrowing a line from Tierney: “Shane and Ilya are for everyone. Hudson and Connor are for themselves” (Bustle).

Then he turned to Storrie. “How much he wants to show himself and share himself to the world is up to him,” Williams said, “and then it’s not up to people to ask for more, or feel like it’s not enough, too little, too much, whatever it is” (Bustle).

It isn’t the first time he’s said it. Bustle notes he once asked fans on Threads to stop “RPFing,” fandom shorthand for writing real-person fiction about him and Storrie (Bustle). The clip went up on X on Oct. 30, ahead of the season premiere of The Assembly on Nov. 1 (clip on X). PCP covered the episode’s Storrie question here.

The Pit Take

This is opinion. Williams handled this about as well as anyone can. He didn’t mock the fans, and he didn’t pretend the show’s pull isn’t real. He just pointed out that loving two characters doesn’t entitle anyone to the private lives of the two men who play them.

The Tierney line is the keeper. Fandom gets to own Shane and Ilya: the fic, the edits, the theories. What it doesn’t get to own is who Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie are when the cameras are off. That isn’t a scolding. It’s a boundary, and it’s one more young stars are going to need to draw out loud.

The Background

Heated Rivalry, the Crave series adapted from Rachel Reid’s hockey romance novels, turned Williams and Storrie into breakout stars, and a second season is one of 2027’s most anticipated TV returns (Bustle). The two have kept having fun with the attention: for Halloween, they dressed as Jesse Plemons’ and Emma Stone’s characters from Bugonia (E! News).
