Halloween ended at midnight, and right on schedule Mariah Carey declared it Christmas. This year’s “It’s Time” video takes a detour first: a title card reading “New York City… October 31st,” a countdown from 11:58 p.m., and Carey fronting a punk show in a dive bar, stage dive included.
The song is “Hermit” by Chick, the ’90s alt-rock side project she quietly helped make and later wrote about in her memoir, as theGrio explains. When the clock hits 12, she trades the punk look for her holiday one and sings “All I Want for Christmas Is You” from the top of a giant tree. Her caption kept it simple: “IT’S TIME!!!!”
After “Choosin’ Texas” took its Hot 100 record this year, the season clearly has some unfinished business.
