The Lowdown

Waller beating D’Angelo with D’Angelo’s own signature crowbar is about as heel as a title retention gets, and it made the closing surprise land. Halloween Havoc leaned hard on haunted-house bits and Danhausen’s wheel, but the two title matches did the heavy lifting, and CM Punk walking into NXT on Wednesday is the story everyone will be talking about.

Key Takeaways

  • Grayson Waller retained the NXT Championship against Tony D’Angelo after a referee bump and a crowbar shot (WWE; PWTorch).
  • Kelani Jordan kept the NXT Women’s Championship by pinning Wren Sinclair with a foot on the ropes (WWE).
  • CM Punk appeared on screen after the main event and challenged Waller for the title on Wednesday, November 4 (WWE).
  • Izzi Dame beat Women’s North American Champion Zaria in a non-title match; no championships changed hands on the show (WWE; PWTorch).

The Story

NXT Halloween Havoc ran Saturday, October 31, with Danhausen hosting and a prize wheel deciding some of the stipulations. Here is how all six matches went (WWE; PWTorch).

Myles Borne def. Tavion Heights (Weapons Wild match)

The former tag partners brought out kendo sticks, chairs, tables and even a fire extinguisher. Myles Borne went after Heights’ injured ankle with a chair, Heights answered by throwing a chair into Borne’s face, and Borne’s first try at Borne Again went wrong when he crashed onto a spilled pile of screws. Borne finally threw Heights off the top rope into a cameraman and through a table, then finished him with Borne Again (WWE).

Izzi Dame def. Zaria (non-title)

Zaria, the Women’s North American Champion, controlled much of the match and even hung Izzi Dame in a guillotine over the top rope. Then the big screen showed a photo of Sol Ruca, Zaria’s former friend, and several women dressed as Ruca appeared around the crowd. Rattled, Zaria grabbed her title belt; while the referee tried to take it, Dame drove her knee into the belt and Zaria’s face for the pin (WWE; Pro Wrestling Dot Net). Dame then told the camera the title was next (PWTorch).

Zilla Fatu def. Charlie Dempsey (Very Nice, Very Evil match)

The wheel landed on a first-time stipulation that combined no rules with falls counting anywhere. Dempsey tried to keep things technical, but Zilla Fatu pulled him outside and held off BirthRight with a shovel. Lexis King, Uriah Connors and Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo kept interfering, at one point smashing a pumpkin onto Fatu’s injured hand. Fatu fought through all of them, paid tribute to his uncle Rikishi with a Rikishi Driver, and won with the Triple Z and the Fatu Splash (WWE).

Kelani Jordan (c) def. Wren Sinclair (NXT Women’s Championship)

Kelani Jordan spent the match attacking Wren Sinclair‘s arm, hitting a shoulder breaker and a frog splash. Sinclair still locked in the Final Wrench, but the damaged arm kept her from clasping her hands and Jordan escaped. Jordan sent her into exposed steel and hit a 450 splash, which Sinclair kicked out of. When Sinclair went back to the Final Wrench, Jordan shoved her into the turnbuckle and pinned her with a foot on the ropes (WWE).

Shiloh Hill def. Naraku

This one played out like a horror short. After the two misted each other backstage earlier in the night, they hunted each other through a haunted set before smashing through a wall into ringside to start the match. When Naraku went for the mist again, Hill blocked it with a cloud of fog of his own and won with Whisper to the Beast (WWE).

Grayson Waller (c) def. Tony D’Angelo (NXT Championship)

Grayson Waller opened by wearing a fedora to mock D’Angelo’s old mob gimmick, and later went into the front row to taunt D’Angelo’s wife and infant son. That fired D’Angelo up: he dropped Waller back-first on the steel steps and dominated with suplexes (WWE; PWTorch).

Waller had stashed a crowbar near the ring. He also hit a rolling cutter off the steps that sent D’Angelo through the announce table, and D’Angelo still came back with Dead to Rights for a near fall. When D’Angelo picked up the crowbar, the referee stepped in, Waller crashed into both of them, and the official went down. D’Angelo’s spear had nobody to count it, Waller hit him with the crowbar, and the Rolling Stunner finished it after 22 minutes and 37 seconds (WWE; Pro Wrestling Dot Net; PWTorch).

Right after the decision, CM Punk appeared on the big screen. He said he had waited to see who walked out champion, told Waller that if he thinks he runs the house, Punk is the landlord collecting rent, and said he would see Waller on Wednesday (PWTorch; WWE).

What’s Next

NXT moves to Wednesday, November 4 this week. Advertised for that show (Pro Wrestling Dot Net; PWTorch):

  • CM Punk challenges Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship (WWE).
  • John Cena is set to appear.
  • Kelani Jordan defends the NXT Women’s Championship against a mystery opponent.
  • Cruz Montana and Dion Lennox meet in an unsanctioned match, with MMA fighter Michael Chandler as the referee.
  • Chad Gable, Rey Fénix and Dragon Lee face The Vanity Project.
  • The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic final, with Cody Rhodes presenting the cup.

Elsewhere on the show, EK Prosper, disguised in a hazmat suit, jumped Kam Hendrix backstage, carrying over their issue from Prosper’s North American title shot (PWTorch; Pro Wrestling Dot Net).

The Background

D’Angelo earned the rematch by beating Myles Borne for the No. 1 contender spot, and the feud turned personal on the October 27 NXT, when Waller showed up at D’Angelo’s home. That episode ended with the two brawling in the parking lot (F4W).

Jordan and Sinclair’s build was just as nasty: on the October 20 episode, Jordan bloodied Sinclair’s friend Kendal Grey with a chair as a message to her challenger (WWE).
