Michael K. Williams
Actor
Omar Little on The Wire.
In memoriam · November 22, 1966 – September 6, 2021
Overview
Michael K. Williams made Omar Little, the openly gay robber who targeted drug dealers, one of The Wire’s defining characters. His performance combined danger, humor and a personal moral code, giving the series an outsider who could expose the contradictions of both police and street organizations. After Baltimore, Williams built another major HBO role as Atlantic City power broker Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire. His film work included 12 Years a Slave, The Road and The Public, while documentary projects allowed him to investigate the systems surrounding people often reduced to crime statistics. He hosted and executive-produced Black Market and worked on Vice’s juvenile-justice reporting. [Career and documentary work](https://www.hooperfuneral.com/obituaries/michael-williams). His five Emmy nominations demonstrate the range of that later career: acting nominations for Bessie, The Night Of, When They See Us and Lovecraft Country, plus a producing nomination for Vice. Those roles included Jack Gee, Freddy Knight, Bobby McCray and Montrose Freeman, respectively. [Television Academy](https://www.televisionacademy.com/bios/michael-k-williams?embed=true). Williams died on September 6, 2021, aged 54. Federal prosecutors subsequently established that fentanyl-laced heroin sold to him caused his fatal overdose. His legacy encompasses a substantial body of dramatic and documentary work beyond Omar.
