Overview

Savannah Guthrie brings a legal background to a television career spanning morning interviews, election nights and major breaking stories. She became a TODAY co-anchor in 2012, having joined the program’s third hour the previous year. NBC also identifies her as its chief legal correspondent and one of the anchors who leads the network’s election broadcasts.

Before moving to TODAY, Guthrie reported from the White House for NBC between late 2008 and June 2011. That assignment involved contributing across the network’s news programs, rather than appearing on a single show. Her subsequent anchor work has included presidential elections, political conventions, Supreme Court nominations and presidential impeachment proceedings. She moderated a Democratic presidential debate in 2019 and conducted a televised town hall with Donald Trump during the 2020 campaign.

Her interview subjects extend well beyond politics. TODAY’s biography lists conversations with performers including Meryl Streep and Harrison Ford, alongside leaders, athletes and people at the center of major news stories. She has also anchored from international events, including Olympic Games and British royal occasions. Those assignments reflect the range of a morning program that moves between hard news, entertainment and live event coverage.

Guthrie studied journalism at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1993, and later earned a law degree from Georgetown in 2002. Georgetown awarded her an honorary law doctorate in 2023. Her professional recognition includes news Emmys, an Edward R. Murrow Award and induction into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2022.

Outside the anchor desk, she co-created the children’s books Princesses Wear Pants and Princesses Save the World. She is also an executive producer of Princess Power, the animated Netflix series based on those books. Her official TODAY biography links her public Instagram and X accounts.
