Overview

Sonja Sohn’s work after Detective Kima Greggs includes both acting and a sustained move behind the camera. Her television credits range from Body of Proof and The Good Wife to Luke Cage, The Chi and Star Trek: Discovery. She returned to ABC as Amanda Wagner in Will Trent, opposite fellow Wire alumnus Ramón Rodríguez. Her film work includes Steven Soderbergh’s High Flying Bird and the 2023 boxing biography Big George Foreman. That screen career runs alongside documentary filmmaking rooted in Baltimore. Her directing debut, Baltimore Rising, examines community activism in the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death. The Slow Hustle followed in 2021, focusing on Baltimore detective Sean Suiter’s death and questions surrounding the city’s police institutions. Production credits identify Sohn as both director and executive producer. This is a different relationship to the city from playing a fictional detective: she is helping select and shape the nonfiction stories viewers encounter. Sohn’s creative interests also predate The Wire. She co-wrote and co-starred in the 1998 film Slam, connecting poetry and performance before her best-known television role. Taken together, the later acting credits and documentaries describe a career that has expanded in responsibility as well as visibility. The documentary’s framing should not be treated as an independently established conclusion about any disputed death.
