The Lowdown
The Bodyguard reunion finally has a date. Netflix will release Trinity, the new political thriller from Jed Mercurio, on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and dropped the first trailer and photos on Nov. 4. Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays a Navy commander on a nuclear submarine, and Richard Madden is the secretary of defense she starts to suspect (Netflix Tudum; Deadline).
Key Takeaways
- Trinity premieres Dec. 1 on Netflix. Tudum says all seven episodes arrive that day (Netflix Tudum).
- Mbatha-Raw plays Commander Katherine Decker, second-in-command of the submarine USS Kansas; Madden plays Secretary of Defense Webb Preston (Netflix Tudum).
- The title refers to a top-secret program code-named Trinity, which Decker gets pulled into (Netflix Tudum).
- Marcia Gay Harden, JD Pardo, Bruce Greenwood, Robert Wisdom, Kirk Acevedo and James Remar are also in the cast (Netflix Tudum; Deadline).
- Mercurio writes and runs the show; 20th Television is the studio (Deadline).

What Trinity Is About
Netflix’s logline is short: a heroic naval officer gets close to a charismatic defense secretary, then finds out he may be at the heart of a dangerous conspiracy. Tudum fills in the rest. Decker is the No. 2 on the USS Kansas, and her unlikely bond with Preston drags her into the politics around the Trinity program (Netflix Tudum). Preston comes from tech rather than politics, which Tudum says makes him look like a threat “in more ways than one” (Netflix Tudum).
Mercurio told Tudum the show mixes “high-octane action with a nail-biting conspiracy thriller” (Netflix Tudum). What’s on Netflix says the trailer opens with Decker seconds away from firing a tactical nuclear weapon at contacts that vanish from the radar, before the story moves to the Pentagon (What’s on Netflix).
Harden plays Margaret Vandenburg, the head of a family business empire with deep political ties, and Jason Ralph plays Brooks Vandenburg. Greenwood is Special Agent Eric Colby, Wisdom is Admiral Griff Tatum, Acevedo is Captain Jock Campbell and Remar is President Paul Barnard (Netflix Tudum).
One number to watch: Tudum lists seven episodes, while Deadline’s report said eight. What’s on Netflix says the order was cut from eight to seven (Netflix Tudum; Deadline; What’s on Netflix).
The Pit Take
We think this is the most promising Netflix drama of the holiday corner. Mercurio and Madden made Bodyguard a word-of-mouth hit, and this time Madden gets to be the man you’re not supposed to trust, which is a smarter use of him than another action-hero role. Putting Mbatha-Raw in the lead is the bigger bet, and we like it. If the conspiracy holds up, Dec. 1 could be a binge weekend that starts on a Tuesday. The Background
Mercurio created Bodyguard, the 2018 BBC thriller that Netflix carried outside the UK and that made Madden a household name; he also created Line of Duty (What’s on Netflix). Netflix first announced Trinity well over a year ago, according to What’s on Netflix (What’s on Netflix).
