The Story
Marvel Studios has confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will be Patrick Stewart‘s last on-screen performance. In a tribute published after his death, the studio wrote that Stewart “made his debut as Professor X in 2000’s ‘X-Men,’” and later added: “He returned to the role once more with 2026’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ his final on-screen appearance.” (Variety; Marvel.com).
Variety notes the film is Stewart’s ninth outing as Charles Xavier. He died on October 28, 2026, at 86, after a brief battle with Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia (Variety).
Joe and Anthony Russo, who direct Doomsday, said in a statement: “We’ve been lucky enough to work with some of our childhood heroes. And Sir Patrick Stewart will always be one of them.” They continued: “A legendary actor with an unmistakeable presence, and an unmatched integrity. Thank you for entertaining all of us, sir. And for teaching us humanity, both on and off the screen” (Variety).
Stewart had no plans to stop. In July he told TV Insider: “As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older. That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers and I love being challenged by new work.” He added: “I can’t imagine ever officially retiring. I’ll always and forever be an actor” (Variety).
Doomsday brings several members of Fox’s original X-Men cast into the MCU alongside him: Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Kelsey Grammer as Beast, with Channing Tatum as Gambit (Deadline).
Tributes came quickly from his X-Men family. Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine opposite Stewart from X-Men to Logan, wrote that he would miss him “all of my days,” and McKellen remembered a man “born and bred in Yorkshire” (see the posts below). The film opens December 18 (Deadline).
