The Lowdown
The Pitt matching Mad Men’s two-for-two run is a win for the old-fashioned idea of a big-order ensemble drama. Meanwhile, Smart and Janney tying the all-time acting record is a reminder that the Emmys still love their veterans. Pluribus getting Gilligan his first writing win is overdue.
Key Takeaways
- HBO Max’s The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series for the second straight year, the first show to do that for its first two seasons since Mad Men (Television Academy).
- Noah Wyle repeated as lead actor in a drama (Television Academy).
- Jean Smart (Hacks) and Allison Janney (The Diplomat) each reached eight acting Emmys, tying Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Television Academy).
- Rhea Seehorn won her first Emmy, for Pluribus, and Vince Gilligan won his first individual writing Emmy for the same show (Television Academy).
The Story
The Pitt, whose second season followed a sweltering summer day in a Pittsburgh emergency room, won Outstanding Drama Series at the 78th Emmys on September 14. It is the first series since AMC’s Mad Men to win the top drama prize for each of its first two seasons (Television Academy).
Noah Wyle also repeated as lead actor in a drama. The Television Academy noted he is the first actor since Bryan Cranston on Breaking Bad to win that category for a show’s first two seasons (Television Academy).
Two of the night’s biggest milestones went to veterans. Allison Janney won supporting actress in a drama for Netflix’s The Diplomat, and Jean Smart won for Hacks. Each now has eight acting Emmys, tying Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most by a performer. Smart is also the first performer to win for every season of a series (Television Academy).
Apple TV’s Pluribus took two awards: Rhea Seehorn won lead actress in a drama, her first Emmy, and Vince Gilligan won his first individual writing Emmy. Tom Pelphrey won supporting actor in a drama for HBO Max’s Task, and DTF St. Louis won limited series (Television Academy).
