Jimmy Olsen’s Gorilla Grodd Murder Mystery Has Wrapped Filming

Skyler Gisondo has finished shooting DC’s eight-episode mockumentary, which puts the Daily Planet on a very strange assignment.

The Lowdown

Jimmy Olsen investigating a gorilla’s murder conviction is exactly the kind of oddball assignment we want to see the Daily Planet tackle. The fun of this premise is watching reporters try to make sense of a superhero world that would make a perfectly ordinary workday impossible.

Key Takeaways

  • Skyler Gisondo says The People v. Gorilla Grodd has completed filming.
  • The HBO Max comedy follows a fictional investigation into Grodd’s conviction for killing his father.
  • Jimmy Tatro plays Grodd; the eight half-hour episodes reunite several Daily Planet characters.

The Full Story

Skyler Gisondo has put down Jimmy Olsen’s notebook for now. In his October 27 interview with The Playlist, the actor said filming had wrapped on The People v. Gorilla Grodd. He described an unusually brisk shoot, with the documentary approach allowing the cast and crew to move through far more pages each day than a conventional setup.

The series gives Jimmy a case to chase: was Grodd wrongly convicted of murdering his father? His Daily Planet colleagues join the investigation, with the whole thing presented as a true-crime documentary made inside the DC universe. The announced premise is a particularly good excuse to let the newsroom carry a story of its own.

According to HBO Max’s series announcement, the comedy runs for eight half-hour episodes. Tony Yacenda directs the season and shares writing and showrunning duties with Dan Perrault. Jimmy Tatro plays Grodd opposite Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen.

Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover and Wendell Pierce return as Steve Lombard, Cat Grant and Perry White. The ensemble also includes Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Perrault, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz.

The shoot is finished, but the cited announcements do not give an exact premiere date. For now, HBO Max has a completed production on its hands and Jimmy has a much bigger assignment than taking Superman’s picture.
