The Lowdown
Netflix has a heist crew worth stealing for. The Take stars Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and on Nov. 3 Tudum confirmed Danai Gurira has joined them. The movie is shooting now in New Jersey (Netflix Tudum).
Key Takeaways
- Netflix pitches The Take as a heist film with a twist, built around three people (a security guard, a bank teller and a veteran thief) who keep conning and double-crossing one another (Netflix Tudum).
- Fernando Meirelles (The Two Popes, City of God) directs from a script by Simon Kinberg (Netflix Tudum).
- The cast also includes Sean Harris, Moisés Arias and Justin Kirk (Netflix Tudum).
- Meirelles produces with Kinberg and Audrey Chon for Genre Films (Netflix Tudum).
- It is in production in New Jersey; Netflix hasn’t set a release date (Netflix Tudum).
The Story
Tudum didn’t say which of the three leads plays the guard, the teller or the thief, and that’s the fun of it. All it says is that the job turns into “a deadly game of cons and double crosses” (Netflix Tudum).
Gurira is best known as Okoye in Black Panther and Michonne in The Walking Dead. Harris played Solomon Lane in the Mission: Impossible films, and Kirk was in Weeds and Succession (Netflix Tudum).
Kinberg, who wrote Mr. & Mrs. Smith, also produces. Samson Mucke is an executive producer (Netflix Tudum).
The Pit Take
In our opinion, this is the most interesting cast Netflix has put together for a movie this year. Washington and Pattinson are both at their best playing men you can’t read, and a heist where nobody can trust anybody is built for that. Adding Gurira gives the crew another actor who can own a scene without saying much. Meirelles isn’t known for genre heists, which is a reason for curiosity, not worry. The Background
Meirelles was Oscar-nominated for directing City of God and directed The Two Popes for Netflix in 2019. Edgar-Jones broke out in Normal People and starred in Twisters (Netflix Tudum). Our image shows Washington at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
