The Lowdown

Patrick Stewart made a starship captain sound like a Shakespearean king and somehow made that feel completely normal. Jean-Luc Picard was the moral center of Star Trek for a generation, and the tributes pouring in from Kirk himself, the Next Generation crew and the newer shows say the same thing: the man and the role set the standard. Losing him days after Walter Koenig makes this a brutal week for Trek fans.

Key Takeaways

The Story

Patrick Stewart, the classically trained British actor who became Star Trek’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the X-Men’s Professor Charles Xavier, died on October 28, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. The news came in a statement from his family, shared through his longtime spokesperson (Deadline; The Guardian), and was also posted to his Instagram (BBC).

The family said he died following “a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia” (Variety).

Born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, on July 13, 1940, Stewart spent his early career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, which this week called him a “colossus of stage and screen” (BBC). He was knighted in 2010 and published his memoir, Making It So, in 2023 (AP).

He took command of the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, played Picard in four films between 1994 and 2002, and returned for three seasons of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard starting in 2020 (Variety). The final season reunited him with Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner.

Marina Sirtis told the Guardian: “It is impossible for me to imagine the world without Patrick in it. It was the privilege of a lifetime to work with him, and having him as a friend was one of the greatest blessings of my life” (The Guardian).

Picard co-creator Alex Kurtzman said Stewart “knew that Jean-Luc Picard would be his legacy” and called him “my colleague… my friend… and in the end, he was and always will be, my captain” (Variety).

The loss lands just days after the death of Walter Koenig, the original series’ Pavel Chekov, on October 25 (AP). Read PCP’s coverage: Walter Koenig, Star Trek’s Chekov, dies at 90.
