How It Happened

This one started at Halloween Havoc. Waller beat D’Angelo to keep the title, and Punk came out afterward to call him out. NXT made the match for this week’s show, and it closed the broadcast on The CW (Fightful).

Owens tipped his hand hours earlier. Fightful reports he was thrown out of the Performance Center after arriving to fight Punk before the title match. During the closing stretch he jetted to the ring, Punk turned to deal with him, and Waller caught him with the roll-up (Fightful).

Punk and Owens already have a match taped for Friday’s SmackDown, so the payback has a date (Fightful). For the build so far, see our Oct. 30 SmackDown results and last week’s NXT.

The Pit Take

We think this is the right finish, even if it stings. Waller beating Punk clean would have been hard to believe, and Punk winning the NXT title would have frozen the brand around a part-timer. Owens costing him keeps Waller’s reign alive, makes Friday matter, and leaves Punk owing NXT a return. Waller gets the bragging rights either way, and he’ll use them. More in Wrestling.

The Background
